The Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun expressway, also known as National Highway 709B (NH 709B), is a 210-kilometer (130-mile) access-controlled highway which will connect Delhi, India's national capital, with Dehradun which is the capital of the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Delhi Dehradun highway passes via the states of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, as well as the districts of Baghpat, Baraut, Shamli, and Saharanpur. The Delhi-Dehradun Highway consists of National Highway 307 (NH-307). 

 

It will include two spurs, or link highways, to connect with cities throughout its route: the 50.7-kilometre (31.5-mile) Saharanpur-Roorkee-Haridwar Highway, and the 121-kilometre (75-mile) Ambala-Shamli Highway, all are six-lane. The project, estimated to cost roughly ? 13,000 crore, aims to reduce the total duration of travel from 5-6 hours to 2.5 hours and 210 kilometres (130 mi). It connects to the Char Dham roadway in Uttarakhand.

 

The Delhi-Dehradun expressway date of completion was initially set for December 2024, however, it was changed to March 2024. The deadline has now been extended to February 2024, before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are announced. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has been directed by the Centre to finalise the construction of the Delhi-Saharanpur Highway throughout the Delhi NCR's borders by the end of February of the following year. This 150-kilometer highway, which is an element of the Bharatmala project, will have six primary lanes and six service lanes. It is anticipated that this highway will be utilised by 1.50 lakh vehicles daily.

 

According to official documents, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is cutting down about 5,100 trees in Delhi as part of the six-lane Delhi-Dehradun expressway building project.

The entire area of 9.58 hectares of considered forest land in Delhi, which had 5,104 trees, has been diverted for highway development.

The Delhi section of the Delhi-Saharanpur highway runs from the Akshardham NH-9 junction to the city's border with Uttar Pradesh.

 

According to the Divisional Conservator of Forest's (DCF) site inspection report, no infractions of the Forest (Conservation) Law of 1980 were reported.

 

Furthermore, the woodland patch is not a component of a national park, a sanctuary for wildlife, a biological reserve, a tiger reserve, an elephant reserve, or a wildlife migratory corridor, nor does it fall inside an eco-sensitive zone. 

 

The highway (709B) will begin at NH 9 near Delhi's Akshardham Temple and finish at the Uttar Pradesh State Border (Loni) through Geeta Colony, New Usmanpur, Shastri Park, and Khajuri Khas.

 

The Delhi-Dehradun Highway is going to include 41 bus route shelters, four underpasses and seven-foot over bridges, and an elevated section covering 6.58 kilometres.

CCTV cameras and LCD boards will also be placed on the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Highway to monitor and enforce traffic laws and provide drivers with appropriate warnings. The speed limitation for vehicles will be set at 70 kilometres per hour, whereas the speed limit for heavy vehicles will be set at 50 kilometres per hour.

 

However, the Ghaziabad Development Authority has put forward linking the Northern Peripheral Road to the Delhi-Dehradun highway at Loni, near Trans Delhi Signature City (Tronica City). This 20-kilometer-long NPR highway will go from Hapur via Meerut to Hindon, Bhopura, and Loni. The anticipated price of this route is Rs 260 crore.
