Delhi Signature Bridge to open for public from 4th November

Aerial View To Start From March-19

As a Diwali gift for residents of the national Capital, the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government is all set to inaugurate the Signature Bridge early November. The bridge, touted to be the country's first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge, was slated to be opened in the year 2010. Now, after numerous delays, it is likely be inaugurated on November 4. Conceptualised in 2004, the Signature Bridge project was approved by the Delhi cabinet in 2007. Construction was to have started that very year, but it took off only by 2010, the original completion date. Delhi government officials said this delay was caused as the project had failed to get an environmental clearance. That clearance finally came in 2011 and the deadline was revised to December 2013. However, the completion date was later pushed to June 2016 and then to July 2017. C Arvind, General Manager, Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC), said that they have written to the traffic department for a no objection certificate. If they get it on time, the Bridge will be inaugurated on November 4. The DTTDC sanctioned the 675 m-long bridge, which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia. The Bridge will link Khajuri Khas as well as neighbouring areas in east Delhi with National Highway-1. The bridge is expected to reduce travel time by at least half an hour for commuters going to Ghaziabad via Khajuri Khas, Yamuna Vihar from Wazirabad, Mukherjee Nagar, Timarpur and Burari. The 35.2 m-wide bridge will have a bow-shaped steel pylon, and with a height of 154 m, it will be twice the height of Qutub Minar. Due to constant delays, the cost of the project escalated considerably. Initially, it was estimated to cost Rs 887 crore; however, in 2016, the DTTDC sent a revised estimate of Rs 1,575 crore to the Delhi government for approval. Officials said that Sisodia, who also serves as the Tourism Minister, has instructed them to ensure there are no delays in the inauguration date this time. A senior official, engaged with the project, said that the AAP government wants to inaugurate the bridge ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. At a recent meeting organised by DTTDC, the project in-charge was apprehensioven about October 31 as the deadline for the bridge's trial runs, citing paucity of funds. As per minutes of the meeting, officials were asked that the contractor should not be told to stop the project work.
